The 2000 racing season saw quite a few first's and second's being accomplished. Greg Brazeau, a seasoned veteran of doing race track announcing at Kinross Speedway and a number of other tracks around Michigan joined 2nd year track announcer George Pinder. Greg and George did an excellent job as a tag-team duo describing the happenings around the track and performing interviews. The Auto Value Super Sprints made their very first trek to Canada in August of 2000. There was quite a bit of excitement when these winged machines took to the track. The Sprints put Laird International Raceway on the map as the fastest 1/3 mile paved oval. Laird saw the first time trial records set in all divisions with the very first car on the track in each class setting the very first record. The Late Models saw Dave Seabrook, a racer from back in days of Heyden Speedway setting the time to beat on 17 August 2000 with a time of 14.126 seconds, but the fastest time for Laird would be set on 26 August 2000 by Kevin Newton when the Auto Value Super Sprints came to Canada for the very first time. In the Late Model Class, Rick Leonard captured his second championship edging out Terry McClelland by a slim four points. Jerry Artuso put a damper on the chances of Bill Poitras repeating as the Super Stock champion, while Brent Palumbo had the Factory Stock championship wrapped up with two races left to go in the season to give him his second championship. A couple of drivers changed classes for this, the second season at Laird. Paul McLean made the jump from Factory Stock, where he finished fifth in points, to pilot the Late Model # 10 to an eigth place finish. Dennis Varcoe moved to the Super Stock class from the Factory Stocks and finished off the season with an impressive 6th place finish. |
